labone senior high schoolLa Bone Senior High School was started in January 1947 at La "Abormi" as La Bone College. The motto was then "Think And Fly". The name La Bone College was first changed in November 1957 to Ghana College, Christiansburg. In 1955, it was changed again to Ghana Secondary School, Labadi. Later in 1956, the name was finally changed to La Bone Senior High School. The motto was also changed to "Primus Semper Aurora", a Latin phrase meaning "Always First At Dawn".

The first graduate headmaster was Rev S.G. Nimako. He was the Headmaster from 1955 to 18th February 1961. The originators of the school were Rev Matei Markwei, Mr. Ailpheus Kofi Ansah Johnson, Mr. John Spencer Bilson and Mr. Joseph Andoh Kesson.

The school, started as a boys' school. It was housed in an uncompleted building. It started with a few students but by February, the number had increased to 120.

During mid-March a catastrophe had hit the school. It got burnt, destroying the personal effects of the students. The only dormitory and the laboratory were totally burnt. Fortunately, the fire claimed no lives. At the time the burning took place, the students (boarders) had left for games in a sister school.

The authorities found it difficult to maintain the school and pay the remuneration of the teachers. It became increasingly difficult to sustain god academic work. A better place therefore had to be found. A two storey-building was secured but was quite a distance from the old place, thereby elongating the journey of the students who had to walk to the present location. The students found the distance a burden and so they stopped attending school whilst new intakes were made from enthusiastic boys around the new site.

In 1950, the then Headmaster, Rev. Markwei Martey and his assistant, Mr. Bilson, left for Liberia and the U.S.A. respectively. The other co-founders took over from them and in that year the numerical strength swelled up to 150 students. It was in this year that the school registered 6 students for the Senior Cambridge School Certificate as private candidates. All the 6 passed with credits in the various subjects offered for the examination. Read more...
